It
won’t
surprise
you
to learn
that
Doc
doesn’t
have
a degree.
He never
told
me how
he earned
his
nickname.
He did
tell
me that
he was
in the
big
one
(World
War
II),
but
that
the
hole
on the
left
side
of his
forehead
was
the
result
of a
wound
he’d
gotten
when
he saved
three
women
from
being
raped.
I never
knew
how
long
Doc
had
been
drinking
except
it had
been
a long
time.
In the
wintertime
he and
his
buddies
would
keep
warm
by the
steam
radiator
just
inside
the
front
door
of the
courthouse.
One
morning
it was
obvious
that
Doc
didn’t
need
money
for
a drink,
because
his
bottle
was
almost
full.
I asked
him
if I
could
take
his
picture.
It was
fine
with
him
so long
as we
didn’t
make
a public
spectacle
of him.
That’s
we why
went
to the
men’s
restroom
where
I took
this
photograph.
